Enjoy the great outdoors and Camp the wilderness

There are few vacation opportunitites quite like camping. Yes, the wilderness of the National Park system or even the outback is a great place to get in touch with yourself and loved ones.

Still, we used a cabin near the capital as a starting point and ended up in touring Arkansas camp grounds around the state, visiting people and enjoying the scenery and quite. I wouldn't have thought so but campsites actually bring out the important things about being a family, namely togetherness. The camps we set up were everything from a one size fits all national chain to camping in a fellahs backyard. LOL.

Many of the camping sites were actually in state parks that allowed overnight visitors. For less than the cost of 1 hotel room, we were able to extend out our vacation to almost twice as long. Of course, if campgrounds aren't your idea of fun, you need to expand your horizons.

Imagine sleeping under the stars at night. OK, no Starbucks but a thermos of hot coffee in the morning next to a running brook or stream is simply a wonderful experience. Cooking your own food on an open fire! Some just use a camping stove with propane and that's ok also.

The great thing about portable stove cooking is that there's less mess and the fire is controlled. Still, the open fire ring is another great way to get meals cooked.

Just viewing the pictures of Arkansas camping facilities and sites on the web doesn't do them justice however. The real jewel of this type of vacation isn't the money saved, though it was at first a consideration. It was the people.

Unlike many in the city, campers, especially tent campers seem to have a built in camaraderie and trust of strangers. It's interesting that when setting up camp, it was normal for some of the locals and even other campers to come by, set a spell and just visit.

It was almost like the old porch from yesteryear where people would stop, sit a spell, visit, tell you about themselves, listen about you awhile then move along. It's called conversation and we should actually not need to be in Arkansas camping to achieve connection with other humans.

Rental Agreement -- The contract that is signed by the renter once the rental counter is reached. Typically this contract is in both English and the native language of the country and deals with requisites such as insurance coverage, dates, car size and type, etc. Please note that your voucher is not a rental agreement.

Insurance -- If you wish to rent an accommodation for a certain period you should be insured against any possible risks : fire hazard, water damage, etc. This kind of insurance can be an extension of your personal insurance (check with your insurer if your personal insurance covers this before departure), or a specific contract limited to the booking period. Whichever you choose, you should carefully check if the period chosen is the right one and if the security deposit corresponds to the value of the furniture and amenities.

Furnished accommodations ranking by the Ministry of Tourism -- A rank according to the accommodation's amenities and level of comfort is awarded by the Ministry of Tourism (in association with other organisations) to furnished accommodations, in conformity to a Chart which is enforced by the law of December 28, 1976. If an owner wishes to have his holiday property ranked, he must fill in and submit a questionnaire to the regional commission. It indicates the norms to be fulfilled for each rank and the owner must accept that his property be visited by an agent belonging to the commission. An identification number is then issued to the owner. However, this particular status, allows the owner to rent out his property by the week only and for no more than six months per year.
